Kickoff Talk brainstorming

2007 FOWA London

For the 2 days of FOWA, London, Simon Willison & Brian Oberkirch did 10ish minutes setting a context for the day's presentations. Not necessarily previewing the talks, but outlining the larger themes we were interested in, and drawing attention to things we thought were key. In other words, our own rants about what we thought were the future of Web apps.

2008 FOWA Miami

Tantek and Brian have about 10 minutes to set up FOWA Miami. Brian would like to at least roughly outline the talk via this wiki. Simon & Brian sort of patterned our talks on the intro's O'Reilly & Battelle do for their conferences. Very talky, passing back and forth between the two of us every few minutes or so. Informal. Here's what we're thinking, what we're excited about.

So, what are our themes? What do we want to spotlight?

First draft:

  • User centered development of product ideas/design patterns
  • Being like the Web: reusing existing pieces, open for future reuse, small pieces, standards, decentralized
  • Independents & innovation

Final:

  1. Simple(r) (twitter, wordpress.com)
  2. Speed (pownce), iteration (flickr, remember the milk), responsiveness (pownce)
  3. Open being really (wordpress.org, plaxo, digg, opensocial one-upping the openness), distributed.
  4. Optimizing for happiness (satisfaction, kathy sierra)
